Tips for Keeping Your Hair Healthy in the Summer Heat

by Natalie Hoilett in Hair Care category

Summer is here and it’s time to enjoy the long days. But what about your hair? Just because you’re outside more doesn’t mean your locks will be protected from the heat, humidity, and sun damage. We’ve put together 5 tips for keeping your hair healthy in the summertime!

– Use products with sunscreen. The hair shaft is sensitive and can easily absorb UV rays which lead to breakage, discoloration, dryness, frizziness, and hair loss. To protect your hair from heat styling damage as well as sun damage try using a product that contains SPF 30 or higher such as Moroccanoil’s Protect line.

– Try hair masks. These are a great way to make your hair look and feel extra healthy, especially when the heat is taking its toll on it! Hair masks should be used twice a week at most for best results. Not only will they help repair any damage that has already been done but also prepare hair for future UV exposure during hot summer months.

– Drink plenty of water! The hair is made up mostly of protein and a lot of it too, so when hair becomes dehydrated from being rendered dry by the sun or heat styling it can become fragile and break easily. Drinking enough water will help to keep hair hydrated which will aid in healthy hair growth as well! Try to drink a minimum of one gallon per day to stay hydrated.

– Get hair trimmed less often! As hair is exposed to more sun and heat the cells in the hair shorten as they are at risk for breaking or falling out. Try going twice as long between your haircuts which will help hair grow faster, stronger, and healthier than before due to less breakage.

– Protect hair at night with a silk scarf or bonnet while sleeping. When hair is exposed to the sun it can become damaged and dry which leads to brittle hair so make sure you protect your hair during the hours of sleep by wearing something that will provide some protection from heat, humidity, and UV rays (silk is a popular choice).

In Conclusion: Summer hair can be tricky to manage, but with these tips, you’ll have the best hair of your life in no time!
